From the River’s Edge – The Pastors’ Blog

PastorsBlog River

Welcome to “From the River’s Edge,” the official blog for the ministers on staff here at BCCUCC. Reverends Dale and Brendan will periodically share their thoughts on our church, faith, community, and larger world issues. At this point, we don’t have a “Comments” section up and running, but we may start that up at some point. In the meantime, they are both willing to talk and share in person with you about any of the points they raise. Feel free to email either of them at dale@bccucc.org or brendan@bccucc.org. Although you not agree with everything they share, we hope you will find these messages thought provoking and faith enriching.

We Are Preparing a Sacred Place

by Rev. Dale Azevedo, Sr. Minister          –          November 25, 2019

This Advent season, we are having a little fun and doing a little good…
and we need your help!

In case you don’t know, Advent is a season in the Christian year consisting of up to four weeks covering the four Sundays leading to Christmas. Advent derives its name from the Latin adventus, which means “coming.” The season proclaims the comings of the Christ–whose birth we prepare to celebrate once again, who comes continually in Word and Spirit, and whose return in […]

If we want to be the change then we cannot be neutral

by Rev. Brendan Curran, Associate Minister          –          November 14, 2019

And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.” – John 2:15

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and love and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others.” – Matthew 23:23

I observe a societal trend taking root.  […]

Be the Change…

by Rev. Dale Azevedo, Sr. Minister          –          October 31, 2019

You’ve been hearing it for a while now:

Be the change..

This, of course, is a truncated version of Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” By saying this, Gandhi was challenging us to not wait around for the world to change, but rather to be the change agent that transforms the world. After all, every significant change begins with one person.

Although you were introduced to this quote through our stewardship campaign, it will soon […]

Living Water! Be the Change!

by Rev. Brendan Curran, Assoc. Minister         –          October 15, 2019

I have exciting news! I recently received a “Make a Difference Grant” from the Genesis Fund of the United Church of Christ to support a program I developed to be offered this year for our church as well as the broader community. For your information, “The Genesis Fund, established in 1996 from funds raised through the Make a Difference Campaign, provides seed money for faith-based projects that are innovative or experimental, and/or represent a […]

Why do you worship?

by Rev. Dale Azevedo, Sr. Minister          –          October 1, 2019

What a fascinating question that is.

Why do you worship?

There are many different facets to that question and, likely, countless different answers. What I am asking today is, why does anyone worship? What is the point of us coming together each week to worship?

Adoration

Let’s start off with the name: worship. Think about that word for a moment. What does it mean to worship? AND, can what we do on Sunday morning actually be considered worship? Do we, in fact, worship? […]
